Workington Sixth Form has announced a ‘highly encouraging’ uplift in results. Over 47% of A-levels are at grades A* to B, six percentage points higher than in the previous year. Average points scored per subject are 10% higher than last year’s, and a quarter more students achieved an extra grade of progress during this academic year.

The next step towards transforming secondary education in Workington will be discussed by the council’s Cabinet this week (Thursday 24 July), with Councillors being recommended to approve the closure of both Southfield Technology College and Stainburn School and Science College.

Gifted young physicists have been recognised at the 2014 Cumbria Physicist of the Year awards ceremony. The sixth-form students, together with parents and teachers, were invited to the ceremony at the University of Lancaster, recently voted number 1 university in the UK for Physics.
