The year 7 students at Stainburn School have an exciting new addition to their curriculum “Adventure Learning”. This is a new approach to learning focusing on the delivery of challenging and exciting lessons inside and outside of the classroom. Each term the students will work on developing key skills that can be applied throughout their learning and later life. This terms focus is teamwork and communication.
The pupils have been developing these skills through a variety of different methods. Including playing and participating in
- Trivia/board games
- Speaking and Listening games
- Origami
- Sports tournament
- Coaching tasks
As part of this programme all year 7 students put their skills into practice when they visited the shores of Derwentwater for an action packed day of teambuilding activities, designed by Stainburn staff. The students participated in 6 different activities including shelter building, orienteering, and “saving the water”. All tasks were designed to develop the students’ ability to work effectively as a team and take on different roles within a group. All students set individual targets for the day, which they had to work to meet. A fantastic day was had by all 160 students and staff and it will certainly become an annual event.
When we went to Derwent water it was an immense day there was never a moment that we were not doing anything apart from dinner. There was a range of activities from shelter building to ping pong activities. I would recommend this day to anyone it is probably one of the best days EVER, if I had the chance to do them activities every day I would. It was a really, really good day.

I remember when I got to Derwent water and I was trembling with excitement, I couldn’t wait to get to the first activity, we didn’t know what it was, it was totally mysterious.
